Abstract

This chapter provides the background and the challenges of wireless mesh technology. It addresses some of the technical influences of wireless mesh networks (WMNs) and focuses on the opportunities that wireless mesh technologies provide for implementing an efficient network for emergency and public safety (PS) services. Video surveillance, mobile, and temporary networks for emergency situations, personnel, and vehicle tracking are some other PS applications that benefit from WMNs. Reliability is the fundamental thing to be considered for the successful deployment of networks during emergency and disaster situations. Rescuers can send live images from the disaster site through the WMNs to the command headquarters where the matching of images takes place. Wireless communications interoperability refers to the ability of emergency response officials to share information via voice and data signals on demand, in real time, when needed, and as authorized. Security is one of the major concerns, especially for a PS and emergency services wireless network.
