Abstract
This paper elicits the benefits of Wireless LANs (WLANs) and provides information about IEEE 802.11 standard with an introduction to 802.11n standard. The gamut of WLAN configurations have been detailed along with WLANs deployment technologies and their working. In addition, IEEE 802.11 layered protocol architecture and general MAC frame format has been described. The power considerations, Voice over WLAN and hidden node problems have also been addressed. Not only the paper outlines the key security vulnerabilities and interference issues with Bluetooth in the wireless LAN architecture but also explains the shortcomings of WLANs.
