Abstract

This paper traces the rapid adoption of the wireless Internet in Japan. It places the success of such services on the close collaboration between content providers and the network carriers, as well as the carriers’ control over the retail of handsets. The country’s experience with these services provides valuable lessons for the development of the industry in other countries.
