Abstract

Utilizing communication technologies to manage traffic, improve highway efficiency, achieve auto-drive, and reduce car accidents has been a topic for research and discussion for a long time. In the early 1990s, research effort was focused on developing intelligent vehicle highway systems (IVHSs) to achieve these goals. Although an IVHS has yet to materialize, the effort in using wireless communications to mitigate traffic congestion, share roadside information, and improve vehicular safety has never stopped.
