Abstract

Abstract This paper discusses the challenges and proposals for combining wireless communications and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). ATM is considered the most suitable transport technique for the Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B‐ISDN), due to its ability to flexibly support a wide range of services. On the other hand, wireless local area networks (LANs) are enjoying a large growth, providing increased transmission speed and reliable communication. The combination of wireless LANs and ATM aims at providing freedom of mobility with service advantages and quality‐of‐service guarantees. The paper studies two main areas of research in wireless ATM: i) advanced medium access control protocols, able to provide adequate support to ATM traffic classes, and ii) signaling enhancements for the support of mobility related operations, such as (de)registration, handover, location update, etc.
