Abstract

Winter on the Outs William Logan (bio) WINTER ON THE OUTS Rain swiped the mossy shallows, obscuring whatever lay outside. The dead garden's roses pruned almost to the root, peoniesawaited the warm spell, the budsminiature red thumbs. The St. John's wort stoodupended like an old besom, bristled twigs bound to a stave. On the scurf of ivy, green heartspressed their suits this way and that,a few still hoping for marriage. Something shoved at the groundfrom below, a mole on the hunt, old age taking a fresh turn, or a dead thing on the wrong side of history.
