Abstract

election 2000 offer both hopes and impediments toward the construction of a truly democratic society. First, the bad news. As Jesse Jackson asserted, emperor has no clothes and no shame. The aftermath of the presidential election revealed what many black radicals have articulated for some time. Namely that the soft underbelly of American democracy reveals the hideous manifestations of racism, class oppression, and state-sanctioned legal and political terror that provide citizens with limited recourse to challenge entrenched power. Nowhere is this more evident then with respect to black voter disfranchisement.
