Abstract

I was walking through Union Station shopping mall in downtown Washmgton, D.C., taking a break from my theological studies, when I stumbled aeross a new game in the Brookstone store. The game, Quarto! by Gi Gamic, immediately grabbed the attention of the mathematician in me. The game is played on a four-by-four grid with sixteen game pieces. Each piece has four different characteristics: tall or short, light or dark, round or square, and solid or hollow. The game is played by two players, who take turns placing pieces on the game board. The goal is to be the first player to create a row, column, or main diagonal with four pieces that share a single characteristic, that is, with four short pieces, four round pieces, and so on. The interesting rub to the game is that each player places a piece that is received from his or her opponent!
