Abstract

I describe how Winnicott's concept of the whole person, play in the therapeutic relationship, and the necessity to hide the real self enabled him to make dramatic changes in his clinical theory and psychoanalytic technique that filled large gaps between how clinical analysis is described and what actually takes place.
