Abstract

THE down character in question is manifested as a white spot or patch on the dorsal surface of the wing of certain chicks which carry black down. Because of the obvious presence of modifying genes the expression of the character varies from a very small area of white to one so large that at times it merges with the white tips of the wings. Occasionally the white spot is present on one wing only. The typical expression of the character, however, may be described as a large definite white spot, separated by black down from the white of the wing tip. The wings of a typical wing-spotted chick and of a non wing-spotted chick are shown in Figure 1.
