Abstract

The author of the article shares his memories of meetings with professor V. P. Berkov and joint work with him on the “Big Dictionary of Russian Catchwords”. This work was preceded by many years of work by a well-known Scandinavian on his fundamental bilingual dictionaries, the original part of which were also sections with winged words and expressions. In them, the scientist saw valuable linguoculturological information and therefore paid special attention to such linguistic units. Having created their extensive file cabinet, V. P. Berkov suggested to the author of the article and professor S. G. Shulezhkova to join forces in creating a large monolingual dictionary of Russian winged words and expressions. This dictionary includes both turns from Russian and foreign classical literature, as well as winged words and expressions from the most modern journalism. The article provides the structure of the dictionary and a sample dictionary entry. According to experts, this dictionary, initiated by V. P. Berkov, became a new word in Russian and world lexicography.
