Abstract

The class of the Luminous Blue Variables (LBV’s) includes the original Hubble-Sandage variables [4], the S Dor variables m the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and several pecuhar objects in the Galaxy (η Car, P Cyg, AG Car, HR Car etc.). The LB V’s are, except for supernovae, the visually brightest stars in galaxies. Due to their high luminosities and their large Ught amplitude, they can be found and studied also in distant galaxies.
