Abstract
The possibility of utilizing articulated blades (flaps) in low-speed windmills is studied. Several linkage configurations are examined for suitability to flap articulation for the generation of power. It is concluded that WM-2, equipped with a single 3 m 2 flap, can deliver in excess of 200 W at a windspeed of 9 m/s. The need to minimize system mass is emphasized. A vertical-axis configuration is proposed, although horizontal axes are found to be admissible. The need to investigate the effect of flap shape and angle on system aerodynamics is stressed.
