Abstract

The shelter effect of porous fence installed in a bulk terminal was experimentally investigated through three-dimensional wind tunnel tests. Three arrangements of porous fences, eight incoming wind directions and three height of fences H (=12,14,16m) were examined to investigate the dependences of wind velocity and turbulence intensity throughout the yard on the above factors. In each case, the ratios of the velocity and turbulence intensity with and without the porous fence, namely λ and σ, respectively, were used to quantify the wind sheltering effect. It was found that the case with a combination of H = 14m and the porous fence arranged in the direction perpendicular to the frequent wind direction (Arrangement-Ⅲ) had the best wind reduction effect (λ = 0.77, σ = 0.90) and the largest economic efficiency. The present paper demonstrates that, to achieve better shelter effect, the porous fence arranged in the direction perpendicular to the normal wind direction is recommended.
