Abstract

Al Duqm is an emerging industrial city in the southeastern coast of Oman. Due to its geographical location, wind energy can play an important role to energise the city and its surrounding area. Wind resource mapping is the first step to identify the wind energy potential of the city. In this paper, wind data of Al Duqm weather station was collected and analysed for the period of 2000 to 2012. Wind power density and other important indices were calculated to determine the suitability of Al Duqm for wind energy implementation. Then, the Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program (WAsP) was used to simulate the annual energy production (AEP) for 1-MW wind turbine over selected region of Al Duqm. WAsP simulation showed that the AEP of the region is about 3.3 GWh at 80 m above the ground.
