Abstract

The aim of this paper is to determine the wind energy potential for electricity generation in Tirana. The wind characteristics and wind energy potential are analyzed using the data collected during a period of four years (April 2008 – March 2012). The Weibull parameters (k and c) were determined based on the wind distribution statistics calculated from the measured data, using the Maximum Likelihood Method. The wind data in relative frequency format is obtained from these calculated Weibull parameters. Both time–series format and Weibull representative wind speed data are used to calculate the wind energy output of three specific wind turbines. The monthly mean wind speed and the power density were computed. Results obtained show that the annual mean wind speed varies between 2.910 m/s to 6.356 m/s. The results show that this site is good for small-scale application wind turbines.
