Abstract

A small scale wind turbine using self-Excited Induction Generator (SEIG) is connected to an Induction machine through a modified back to back converter (MBBC) and Matrix converter (MC). The proposed converter employs only eight switches (MBBC) and has the capability of delivering sinusoidal input currents with unity power factor and bi-directional power flow. Another proposed converter (MC) can contribute to the realization of low volume, sinusoidal input current, bi-directional power flow and lack of bulky reactive elements. All these reasons lead to the development of MC in WECS. This paper describes the feasibility and the operational limitations of the proposed structure. The Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) value for MBBC and MC output voltage are compared by using MATLAB/Simulink software. The simulated results are analyzed and show that THD value is better for MBBC topology.
