Abstract

Wind Chill Lynn Gilbert (bio) Battling a wind sharpfrom the northwest,I trudge slowly around the stream-fedsmall lake in the park, namedfor a local environmentalistwho died before her time.Hopeful signs posted here and therepicture likely wading birdsthough none appear today. The air stands at freezingwith wind chill, but even in March there’s noice or snow. I break off a stickeryhandful of dry teasel for a bouquetof sorts, and wonder when the pond’s marshy edgeswill come alive with frog noiseand sun break through the mottled hazethat passes for sky—perhapswhen the accursed plaguelifts from the land. Thenthe red-winged blackbird willonce more whisk from branchto branch, whistling.
