Abstract

The ornithological collections of William Swainson were largely disposed of in an auction and a private sale to the University of Cambridge before Swainson emigrated to New Zealand in 1840. Surviving documents tell us quite a lot about the bird collection although it is uncertain how much if any of it survives today. Much unpublished material, chiefly illustrative, documenting Swainson's ornithological work survives in libraries in New Zealand, and a newly rediscovered and long lost collection of ornithological drawings, part of the private sale of 1840 is discussed in relation to the larger collections in New Zealand.
