Abstract

The design of magnetics is a real challenge for power electronics engineers. To get a good design means finding the right combination of core material, core shape, bobbin/coil former, winding layup, winding wire or foil, insulation, and terminations. This makes even a one winding inductor a complex multidimensional optimization problem. The author gives a brief overview of several types of magnetics design automation highlighting their capabilities and limitations. It is concluded that these tools bode well and that power electronics designers can look forward to an ever evolving capability in the automated design of magnetic devices. So what do you think? Will a computer design your next transformer or inductor?
