Abstract

A review is presented of the damage caused by wildfowl to rice, winter cereals and other crops in Japan. Spot-billed ducks and mallard eat rice seed and seedlings in spring and ripening ears of rice in summer. In winter these ducks, wigeon, white-fronted geese and bean geese also graze on the leaves of winter-sown wheat and barley. Accurate assessment of the damage is needed to plan and carry out control, which could include the provision of alternative feeding areas.
