Abstract

A wiki enables people to collaboratively edit texts. Wikis are used to create encyclopedias and to provide information about popular culture or regional facts and general news. The biggest application of the wiki‐system is Wikipedia. Two factors account for the importance of Wikipedia: (1) Wikipedia's enormous reach and (2) the frequent use of Wikipedia by professional journalists. Wikipedia is written and maintained by a community of volunteers. Their views, their political positions, and their prejudices influence Wikipedia's articles. Conflicts within Wikipedia's community reflect societal conflicts. Using instrumental editing, users try to influence Wikipedia's articles: They play down information that contradicts their views and exaggerate information that supports it. Sometimes Wikipedia covers upcoming news stories. However, the Wikimedia foundation's project dedicated to wiki‐based news reporting is Wikinews. Wikinews is considerably smaller than Wikipedia. The quality and the speed in which Wikipedia responds to news contribute to the problems of Wikinews .
