Abstract

Music is a universal language that plays a profound role in our society. OPM songs serve as a means of expressing emotions, introducing culture, and acting as a form of communication for Filipinos. However, as times change, the emotions and cultures presented in OPM songs may also evolve. This study aims to identify the themes and Filipino cultures embedded in OPM (Original Pilipino Music) songs of the 21st century. Through the analysis of lyrics from OPM songs awarded "Song of the Year" at the Awit Awards by the Philippine Association of the Record Industry, Inc spanning from 2001 to 2022, the study seeks to understand the culture of the 21st-century Filipino. Based on the study's findings, OPM songs of the 21st century contain themes and cultures reflecting various life experiences of Filipinos, with many of these cultures being traditional Filipino values. This suggests that despite the influence of globalization, the Filipino identity, customs, values, and traditions remain alive and well, passed down from their ancestors. It is recommended to conduct a more extensive study of OPM songs in the 21st century, emphasizing their influence on Filipinos to determine whether the cultures presented in the songs are understood and continued by Filipinos. Furthermore, integrating OPM songs into education is suggested to enhance students' knowledge and understanding of Filipino culture, fostering a deeper connection to their language and behaviors.
