Abstract

The Wigner-Eckart theorem is applied to give the general form of (γμ) diagonal matrix elements of central interactions belonging to (22) of SU 3 in Elliott's projected‖ γμKLM> scheme. The result involves three reduced matrix elements which depend on the details of the interaction. The Clebsch-Gordan coefficients are given in closed form for arbitrary (γμ). The result is applied to 24Mg, neglecting the spin-orbit interaction and all but the (22) part of the central interaction. A K= L=4 level is predicted at 9.34 MeV.
