Abstract

Studies show that approximately fifty percent of battered women who utilize emergency shelters return to their abusive relationships. In an unusual step for a women's shelter, the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter addressed this issue by developing a Men's Crisis Service for the abusive partners. The Men's Crisis Service attends first and foremost to the safety of the woman; it is accountable to the Shelter in general and the woman in particular. This paper describes the Men's Crisis Service, its relationship to the Shelter, and the Narrative/Constructivist clinical approach to its clients.
