Abstract

The radiative width of the 4.931 MeV 3 2 − state in 29Si has been measured by a nuclear resonance fluorescence scattering experiment. The reaction 28 Si( d, pγ) 29 Si served as Doppler-broadened gamma source. Pulsed-beam time-of-flight tecniques were used to eliminate effects due to the considerable neutron background from (d, n) reactions in the target. The experiment yielded gG=(0.57∓0.09) eV corresponding to a ground state transition strength of |M| 2(E1 = 6.72 · 10 −3 Weisskopf units. The upper limit for the width of the 6.379 MeV 1 2 − state was found to be Γ( 1 2 −) ≦ 2.0 eV , corresponding to a ground state strength of |M| 2(E1)≦ 6.72 · 10 −3 Weisskopf units.
