Abstract

We examine resonant pair creation in the presence of strong electric fields, such as would be produced in heavy-nucleus collisions. Including the current from the e +e − pairs as a perturbation to earlier results which showed the possibility of infinitely-narrow resonances, we compute the width of the resonances. This turns out to be about 30 keV, which is in the range of the experimentally observed width of pairs created in collisions of heavy nuclei.
