Abstract

Crete is admired for its Ancient Culture. It is suitably located for athletic activities as it can offer ideal weather and environmental conditions as well as an extensive coastline. The island is one of the most suitable regions in Greece for exercising both marine and ground athletic activities. The main difference between athletic and mass tourism is that “potential consumers” of athletic tourism do not constitute a vague social group but they have specific characteristics, preferences and behaviour. We attempted to investigate these by undertaking a field research project, which was materialized between June and September 2003 in Crete. One of the fundamental research objectives was the investigation of the tourists' preferences with respect to marine and ground athletic activities. The processed results are thoroughly described. Finally, general conclusions and recommendations are presented.
