Abstract

Presently, PMUs have been widely applied to the wide-area power system monitoring and control system (WAMS) of practical interconnected power systems and they can help improve the stability performance. This paper presents a robust power system damping controller of a Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) using a simple fuzzy logic controller designed based on the observed signals from Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). In this paper, two PMUs are installed at the generator buses located far way in different areas. As a result, the low-frequency inter-area oscillation can be detected more obviously. The control signal obtained by PMUs is used as the control input of the proposed TCSC damping controller. The fuzzy logic controller design of the TCSC damping controller is based on the observed signals from PMUs. Some simulations are carried out in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed controller compared with the results from the conventional lead-lag damping controller. The simulations results reveal that a significant improvement of damping performance and robustness can be obtained by using the proposed fuzzy logic controller.
