Abstract

A proposal related to experimental fracture mechanics suggested by Professor W. Soete, Gent University, Belgium, is investigated in the present paper. The concept of two critical crack lengths of general yield is proposed, and their physical meaning and engineering application are presented. Based on the experiment and analysis, an engineering method for the assessment of defects in pressure vessels is suggested.
