Abstract

Based on the multi-scattering Mie theory, the effective relative permittivity and permeability of metal-dielectric non-resonant artificial dielectric are derived in a closed form in this study for a quite broad frequency range. The artificial dielectric is a 3-D infinite isotropic homogenous dielectric medium with periodically imbedded non-magnetic metallic inclusions of spherical shape. The obtained effective medium theory is shown that belonging to a general class of non-resonant metamaterials, the considered composite medium exhibits an effective “ultra-low index behavior” at the THz frequencies. The results obtained for the case of non-magnetic metallic inclusions are compared with the Lewin’s theory. The comparisons of results of the proposed theory with the experimental results of the authors are presented in the study from deep UV to visible region.
