Abstract

The modern power systems operates in highly complex and stressed conditions and any occurrence of large disturbance may lead to loss of synchronism, if not taken care of, with consequent interruption in supply and loss of economy. This paper presents an approach which can determine the transient stability status through wide area synchrophasor measurements which are fast enough to apply emergency control action. The emergency control actions may prevent the system from imminent blackout. The proposed methodology also indicates the time to initiate the appropriate emergency control action such as generator tripping and load shedding. The proposed approach is tested using IEEE 39-bus New England system and the application results are promising.
