Abstract
This paper deals with the Wide Area Backup Protection (WABP) scheme for multi-terminal transmission lines. In the proposed scheme, the Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) are optimized. With the optimized Phasor Measurement Unit implemented on network topology, Backup Protection Zone (BPZ) is formed which are the subspaces of the lines and buses. In the transmission network whenever faults occurs, the sum of zero/and positive sequence currents entering the faulted BPZ is determined. The faulted zone is detected in a short duration by the proposed scheme. Due to this, the effect of fault on the network is reduced. To show the effectiveness of the scheme, it is applied in the standard Western system coordinating council (WSCC)-9 bus power system using MATLAB.
