Abstract

In this commentary, a geographer offers his personal perspective on the desire to travel, the purpose and significance of travel, the diversity of travel experiences, changes in travel and its study, and potential future developments. It is presented in three parts. (1) The first is a personal narrative of a multifaceted life enriched by travel experiences, and tracing familial roots through genealogical research. Travel has been a constant theme, shaping the author’s identity and academic pursuits, particularly in geography. (2) The second part discusses the origins of the academic journal, Tourism Geographies, which begins with the Tourism Study Group of the International Geographical Union (IGU) in 1996 and culminates with a special issue on tourism and the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. (3) The commentary concludes with reflections on the deeper purpose of travel, suggesting that, despite apparently growing global conflicts, we are more connected than ever, and travel and tourism, in particular, contribute to a shared global sense of place and deeper global consciousness.
