Abstract
Law enforcement responsibilities have evolved over the years. More than 350 years ago in the United States, communities saw a need for law and order, and volunteers began unofficial law enforcement units. The “policemen” of those societies were often tasked with more straightforward policing responsibilities that did not necessarily require the breadth of knowledge needed by police officers today, even for rudimentary functions.
