Abstract

A simple d-p tight binding model is employed to study the TiC(111) surface. We show that it reproduces the observed titanium terminated TiC(111) surface relaxation and we demonstrate that the observed Ti surface termination is a consequence of the difference in the evaporation rates for carbon and titanium atoms at the surface. The carbon atoms evaporate much faster than the titanium atoms.
