Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper explores the importance of various factors including ethical concerns, payment avoidance, variety of downloading choices, and “beating the system” in relation to students' decisions on downloading music. A survey was administered in four nations and was comprised of factors based on previous academic and press articles, interviews, and consultation with students and experts. Avoiding payment, getting more choices, and ability to download individual tracks appeared to be rated at higher levels of importance than ethical concerns and a desire to beat the system. These data suggest that downloading decisions may be more pragmatic than some views suggest.
