Abstract

This article is a companion piece to the article on Quest of the Unhistorical Jesus and the Quest of the Historical Jesus. In both quests the results were mixed. The study of the historical Jesus is needed to correct the omissions and misrepresentations, and to inform faith. This study is needed in both Christian devotion and Christian preaching. It is also needed by systematic theology. This study helps sort fact from fiction. No single account can represent the historical Jesus, for no single account can represent every perspective. Meier's of rejection and execution focuses on Jesus' violent end, but does not link up with the litany of charges against Jesus that date from his early days. Keywords:Christian devotion; Christian preaching; criterion of rejection and execution; historical Jesus; Meier; systematic theology; unhistorical Jesus
