Abstract

• Traditionally, nurses in private cardiology practice have been task-orientated. • In the New Zealand public health sector, senior nursing roles have been identified to improve patient care, increase patient flow, and encourage holistic care focussing on better patient outcomes. • Most patients seen in private practice are in prevention mode. Clinical nurse specialist roles in interventional and clinical areas in cardiology include: • Nurse-led clinics • Patient focus information and resources • Website development • Patient follow-up, and • Triage assessment and patient follow-up. Future development: • Background for recognition and support from insurance companies • National rehabilitation standards provided by public hospitals to include private practice • Nurse-led clinics • Feedback from patients • Website traffic • Resources • Data collection provided to insurance companies in support of this cause. • Improved patient outcome standard of patient care is continuous across private and public sectors.
