Abstract

ABSTRACTThis follow-up study investigated why same-sex couples in Taiwan break up. In-depth interviews were conducted with four sexual-minority men and 16 sexual-minority women. Their reasons for break up included infidelity, life-stage incompatibility, rigid interaction patterns, and loss of trust. The results suggest a correlation between gender and the reasons for termination. Sexual-minority female couples seem to be more emotionally enmeshed and put more emphasis on exclusivity, which tends to put strain on the relationship. Female couples break up primarily due to infidelity. Male couples seem to have a higher incidence of and tolerance for infidelity, and a much lower breakup rate.
