Abstract

ABSTRACT This paper estimates the poverty level in Spain and the Czech Republic during 2013–2016 and analyzes the reason why poverty in Spain is higher. The contribution of this paper lies in decomposing horizontal poverty disparities between countries with similar development level. We find that in Spain inequality is higher, and the poor (especially the ultrapoor) are poorer than those in the Czech Republic, which offsets the poverty reduction effect of Spain’s higher mean income and renders its poverty level higher.
