Abstract
Is plasma technology useful, or is it a solution looking for a problem? For an answer see the growing number of companies that are turning to plasmas to modify materials. But there are obstacles to the widespread technological application of ionized gases. In particular, although the physics of astrophysical and fusion plasmas is widely studied, an understanding of the behaviour of industrial plasmas is less well developed.
