Abstract

Narcissists capitalize on positive first impressions: They perform well in interviews and are often chosen as leaders. However, these are not the only routes to the top. Upward mobility in formal hierarchies is frequently contingent upon supervisory evaluations and recommendations. Using two multi-source studies involving employees and their supervisors, we examined the relation between employee narcissism and supervisor ratings of promotability (potential to function well in higher-level positions). We tested predictions based on two contrasting theoretical perspectives. According to the display of power perspective, narcissism will positively predict promotability due to narcissists’ enacted power. According to the impression management perspective, narcissism will negatively predict promotability due to the self-presentational tactics of self- promotion. Results favored the display of power perspective. The findings explain narcissists’ rise through the ranks.
