Abstract

Johnny can't read because of high testosterone levels in fetal development and subsequent poor brain lateralization. Neurological research has delineated a language pathway in the left hemisphere of most native English speakers. Reading development is contingent on the full growth and function of all areas within that pathway. Such growth establishes the lateralization of the brain for language and literacy development. The Summerhill Lateralization Scale (SLS) uses tests of midline crossing, some aspects of Bender's (1938) Visual‐Motor Gestalt Test with Koppitz's (1971) additions, and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children — Revised (Wechsler, 1974) Coding and Digit Span scores to obtain a profile of left brain maturation. Three discrete lateralization categories have been established. Instructional strategies based on the principle of factorized teaching have been devised for each category.
