Abstract
There is increasing opposition to racism in many sections of Scottish society. This opposition is, however, often accompanied by a disclaimer to the effect either that there is no racism in Scotland or that racist activity is much less serious than that found in, say, London or Johannesburg. We would agree that experiences of racism in Scotland are often but not always different from experiences of racism in other countries. However, there is nothing to be gained by seeking to place Scotland on a league table of racism. Understanding the particular formations of racism in Scotland has a value in that it can assist us in developing an anti-racist strategy that acknowledges and builds upon the experiences of Scottish history and society.
