Abstract

The patient with chronic airway obstruction has the second most common cause for admission to hospitals, and on a nationwide basis, has an ailment which is the second most common cause for disability under the Social Security system. Thus, nurses and other health personnel working both in and out of hospitals will encounter an increasing number of emphysema patients in the future. This, coupled with the fact that the disease is a chronic progressive one, makes understanding the emphysema patient of paramount importance for all who provide health care today.
