Abstract

1 v WHY DO WE DOUBT the presence of pain? I have asked myself this question often over the last 10 to 12 years and have never come up with a good answer. Why is it that we, as human beings, do not want to hurt and are likely to seek health care when we have unrelieved or unmanageable pain yet, we, as nurses, are the first to doubt a patient’s complaint of pain? The literature often blames our poor assessment and treatment of pain on a lack of adequate education, but I wonder if there is something more. Are we failing to truly believe our patients and act as their advocates?
