Abstract
WHY DO NURSES WORK where they work? Each nurse may relay something unique. Some may report quality of life, convenience, or flexibility. Others will report a love for patient care, teamwork, comradery, or autonomy within a role. If this is why a nurse continues within a role, then what causes a nurse to seek employment elsewhere? How are healthier units created that value both compassion and thoughtfulness at the bedside as well as emotional intelligence? How can healthy work environments be maintained despite personnel changes? What changes within an environment cause a nurse to declare that a particular position is no longer suitable? Do different generations have different thresholds or tolerances for certain workplace behaviors? Kate E. Dubos, BSN, RN, CCRN, CPAN, Surgical Daycare Unit, Elliot Hospital, Manchester, NH
