Abstract
ABSTRACTFrom the time of its first commercial applications, the microwave processing field has been in constant flux. Many electronics firms have been in and out of this market. Many of the highly touted applications of a few years ago remain idle curiosities today with many kilowatts worth of equipment in disuse. The reasons for this are multitude: high capital cost of industrial microwave equipment, high operating costs, short and unpredictable magnetron life and other electronic failures, misreading of the market opportunities and technological advances in other conventional heating systems, to name a few. A typical case history of failure: the potato chip industry, is described in detail.
