Abstract

Abstract This review essay introduces and compares six English-language scholarly monographs that analyze the emergence of illiberal rule in Hungary since 2010. Placing the converging arguments of these books in a comparative international context highlights the deep gulf between the official, self-congratulatory, and broadly accepted Hungarian perspective and the more critical academic interpretations published abroad.
